Dental Emergencies – First Aid Guide
Knocked Out Tooth
Save the tooth or tooth pieces in a contact lens solution, milk or water. If there is persistent bleeding, apply pressure with a cool wet compress (a tea bag will do in a pinch). Do not attempt to clean the tooth or damaged area. Avoid smoking, spitting or drinking through a straw to allow a clot to form. Call 416-800-2542 immediately for a dental assessment. Time is of the essence when it comes to successfully replanting a tooth.
Broken/Fractured Tooth
Keep the area clean by gently massaging the area with a soft toothbrush and/or rinsing with mouthwash or warm salt water. If you are bleeding, apply pressure with a cool wet compress. Do not remove the loose tooth fragments! Save all pieces of tooth (or filling) and call 416-800-2542 immediately. Take appropriate pain medication if necessary.
Toothache
Avoid biting, sucking, cold and hot in the area that is hurting. If the pain becomes severe and there is swelling, apply cold compresses and call 416-226-26000 immediately. Take appropriate pain medication if necessary and we’ll do our best to get you pain-free as soon as we can.
Bitten tongue, cheek or lip
Gently clean the area with a cool, moist cloth. To control swelling apply crushed ice compress. If bleeding is present and persists, apply pressure with cool wet compress or tea bag. If bleeding still persists, then seek immediate medical attention. Take appropriate pain medication if necessary.
Bleeding gums
Bleeding gums are most often associated with gum disease. Proper brushing and flossing is needed to keep your teeth and gums healthy. If bleeding persists contact us and we’ll help you get comfortable quickly.
Gum boil
Keep the area clean by carefully massaging with a soft toothbrush and/or rinsing with mouthwash or warm salt water. Do not try to pop the gum boil. Call us immediately for proper assessment. Take appropriate pain medication if necessary.
Canker sores
Keep the area clean by gently massaging with a soft toothbrush and/or rinsing with mouthwash or warm salt water. It is very important to keep the area clean to avoid infection. Make sure to avoid hot or spicy foods and liquids. Healing should occur in 10-14 days, if not, call us immediately. Take appropriate pain medication if necessary.
DO NOT apply pain medication directly to affected area.
Teething pain
Soothe with ice chips wrapped in a damp cloth. Use of appropriate pain medication and cool teething gel can be helpful but do not overuse. If fever is associated, call us immediately.
Loose baby tooth
Please allow children to gently wiggle their own loose baby tooth. Never use excessive force.
Wisdom tooth
Try and keep the area clean by gently massaging the area with a soft toothbrush and/or rinsing with mouthwash or warm salt water. If pain becomes spontaneous and severe or jaw swelling is associated with the area, apply cold compresses and contact us ASAP. Take appropriate pain medication if necessary. You must avoid smoking.

Cosmetic Dentistry in Toronto has come a long way in the past 10 years, dental fillings and other tooth restorations were originally made of gold, silver or some other metal, which were then veneered with porcelain to hide the filling. With technological advances in cosmetic dentistry in Toronto most dental work can be made entirely of porcelain or composite materials that more closely mimic the appearance of natural tooth structure. The teeth colored materials are bonded with resin adhesives to the underlying tooth structure. Unlike silver fillings (a.k.a. amalgams) they are entirely free of mercury. Many dentists in Toronto offer these procedures to be cosmetic because their patients prefer natural looking teeth.

Another innovation of the Cosmetic Dentist is the invention of teeth whitening or “teeth bleaching” and is now the most common Cosmetic Dental procedure. While many “do it yourself” whitening options are now available on the market, dentist-supervised treatments remain the recommended procedure for lightening discolored teeth and give you the best results for your money.

Contouring, which is also known as tooth reshaping, is an instant treatment now available in cosmetic dentistry in Toronto. Cosmetic dental reshaping and contouring is a procedure to correct crooked teeth, chipped teeth, cracked teeth or even overlapping teeth in just one quick and easy session. The dental reshaping procedure can even be a replacement for braces and retainers under certain circumstances and it is also a procedure of subtle changes. A few millimeters of reduction and a few millimeters of tooth-colored laminate is involved. Tooth reshaping, or dental contouring, is commonly used to alter the length, shape or position of teeth by dentists in Toronto.

Dental bridges or false teeth are known as a pontics, which are fused between two porcelain crowns to fill in the area left by missing teeth. The two crowns holding it in place are then attached to your teeth on each side of the false tooth; this is known as a fixed bridge. This procedure is used to replace one or more missing teeth. Fixed bridges are permanent and cannot be taken out of your mouth as you can do with removable partial dentures. Bridges can reduce the risk of getting gum disease, help correct some bite issues and even improve your speech. Bridges require your commitment to serious oral hygiene, but will last as long as ten years or more.
